Introduction

Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These harmful materials are called pollutants and cause adverse changes in the climate. Pollution is the largest environmental cause of diseases. It also affects the quality of life more than one can imagine.

Kinds of Pollution

There are several types of pollution, namely -

- Water Pollution

- Air Pollution

- Noise Pollution

- Soil Pollution

- Radioactive Pollution

Water Pollution:

It can be defined as the introduction of pollutants into the water bodies like rivers, lakes, seas, oceans, etc. due to human activities. Mills and factories pollute water by releasing toxic chemicals and waste products into the nearest water source without treating them. Polluted water causes serious damage to both human and marine life.

Air Pollution:

It can be defined as the introduction of dust, smoke and other harmful gases into the air from motor vehicles, mills and factories. It causes many types of respiratory diseases like asthma. Air pollution is a major cause of global warming which results in rising sea levels, melting icebergs, loss of habitats etc.

Noise Pollution:

It can be defined as unwanted or excessive sound that affects human health, wildlife and environment. Noise pollution is commonly generated by many industrial, non-industrial and construction activities. If the level of noise increases above 80 dB, it can cause temporary or permanent deafness in people. It causes stress, fatigue, depression and anxiety in both humans and animals.

Soil Pollution:

It can be defined as the introduction of toxic and harmful substances into the soil due to the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture, deforestation, industrial waste etc. It causes the loss of natural nutrients present in soil. Deforestation causes soil erosion which disturbs the balance of flora and fauna.

Radioactive Pollution:

It can be defined as the introduction of radioactive substances into the environment during nuclear explosions and testing of nuclear weapons. Exposure to radiation can cause severe health problems to humans, animals and marine life.

Prevention of Pollution

Pollution is damaging our earth severely and we need to realize its effects and prevent this damage as soon as possible. We must work together towards the common goal of protecting the environment for future generations. We should plant more trees, recycle waste materials, make less use of fertilizers and pesticides, stop disposal of waste materials into water bodies, use public transport vehicles etc. Pollution is a global problem and we must all come together to save our planet.
